Filling a 2x4 bed
Volume is length x width x depth, so a 2x4 bed needs the same soil whichever plan you pick. These figures include the 10 percent most people wish they had allowed for settling.

Six inches is the classic square foot gardening depth and is enough for almost everything on this page. Go to 12 inches if you want carrots and potatoes to size up properly, or if the bed sits on concrete rather than open ground.Work out bag counts for any depth.
How to use these plans
- Face the bed. The top row of every plan is the north edge. Tall crops go there so they shade the path, not your lettuce.
- Check your frost date before you sow anything. The cool-season plans go in weeks before your last spring frost; the warm-season plans go in after it. The planner turns your frost date into a sow-and-harvest date for every plant in the bed.
- Swap freely, but keep the spacing. Replacing lettuce with spinach is fine. Squeezing in an extra tomato is not - crowding is the single most common reason a first raised bed underperforms.
- Print it and take it outside. Open the plan in the planner and print - you get the grid with labels, no menus or ads.
At 2 ft wide you can reach the middle from either side without stepping on the soil, which is the whole point of a raised bed - compacted soil undoes the method.

How many plants fit in a 2x4 raised bed?
A 2x4 bed is 8 square-foot squares. How many plants that holds depends entirely on what you grow, because square foot gardening puts 1, 4, 9 or 16 plants in a square depending on the plant's size. The 2 finished layouts on this page work out at 30 to 43 plants - every one of those counts is calculated from the spacing data, not estimated.
How much soil does a 2x4 raised bed need?
Filling a 2 ft x 4 ft bed to 6 inches deep takes 4 cubic feet; to 12 inches it takes 8 cubic feet (0.33 cubic yards once you add the usual 10 percent for settling). Can I reach the middle of a 2x4 bed?

Do I have to follow these plans exactly?
